THE MADURESE TRADITIONAL UTTERANCES IN DISTRICT OF SUKOWONO JEMBER REGION: FORM, MEANING, AND FUNCTION

ABSTRACT

The traditional utterances are one of the traditional cultures used as the attitude’s orientation. The use of the traditional utterances aims to create a harmonious social relationship. This research uses descriptive qualitative method in which making the description of the traditional utterances’ form, meaning, and function applied by Madurese people in Sukowono District, Jember Region. The results showed that the Madurese traditional utterances are classified into five forms: (1) parebhâsan (saloka), (2) bhângsalan, (3) sendhilân, (4) paparèghân, dan (5) tembhâng. In addition, there are three functions of it which are used to advise, tease, and praise. There are 20 kinds of traditional utterances that are used to advise: 10 parèbhâsan, 2 bhângsalan, 3 sendhilân, 3 paparèghân and 2 tembhâng.  Moreover, the traditional utterances that are used to tease consist of 29 utterances: 14 paparèghân, 4 bhângsalan, 2 sendhilân, 4 paparèghân, and 5 tembhâng. Meanwhile there are 10 utterances used to praise: 5 parèbhâsan, bhângsalan (no data), 2 sendhilân, 2 paparèghân, and 1 tembhâng.
