PADJARAKAN SUGAR FACTORY IN PROBOLINGGO DURING 1998-2005

Abstract

This reasearch aimed to describe and analyze the dynamics of Padjarakan Sugar Factory in Probolinggo, during 1998-2005. The reasearch used sociological-economic approach and social change theory. PG Padjarakan is one of the sugar factories in Probolinggo Regency. The results showed that after the enactment of Presidential Instruction Number 5 of 1998-2005, the sugar production of Padjarakan Sugar Factory increased. The policy gave freedom to farmers to grow non-rice commodities. In order to increase the production of sugar, PG Padjarakan decided to cooperate with farmers using land lease system. The existence of PG Padjarakan influenced people in economy, socio-cultural life and environment. Such changes can be seen from the increase of economic income, the progress of public mindset and the utilization of waste generated by PG Padjarakan.
