An Analysis of the Types and the Patterns of English Collocation in ”Passion”

Abstract

 

This thesis aims to analyze the types and the patterns of English Collocation and the application in a short story entitled “Passion” written by Alice Munro in 2004. The  data of this research are in the form of sentences and utterances that contain English collocation. In this respect, collocation is the combination of particular words which tend to occur or belong together. The source of the data in this research is a short story entitled “Passion” written by Alice Munro in 2004. The English collocation that will be analyzed in this research is lexical and grammatical collocation found in the selected sentences and utterances.  Based on the form of the data produced and the data analysis, this research applies mixed method as research method that involves collecting, analyzing, and integrating quantitative and qualitative research.  The data of this research are analyzed using the theory of lexical and grammatical collocation by Benson et al (1985). The result shows that based on the classification of collocation: lexical and grammatical collocation according to Benson et al’s theory (1985), it is found that there are 93 collocations in the text: 51 lexical collocations and the rest 42 grammatical collocations. The most dominant type of collocation used in the text is lexical collocation type L3 about 30 or 58.82 %. The most dominant use of the lexical collocation type L3: Adj. + Noun is proposed to describe things or nouns which can lead the readers to understand and imagine what the things or nouns look like. The use of grammatical collocation is related to the description of expressions of the characters in the story which can lead the readers determine the characteristics of each character in the story and to show that the characters doing repetitive manner.
