THE ROLE OF FISHERMEN’S WIVES IN IMPROVING THE ECONOMY OF FAMILY IN MIMBO AREA, SUMBERANYAR VILLAGE, BANYUPUTIH, SITUBONDO DISTRICT, 2001-2008

Abstract

Mimbo is a rural area in Sumberanyar Village, Banyuputih District, Situbondo. Mimbo is located in northern part of Situbondo at the edge of Madura Strait, and the area is very potential. Located in coastal area, the settlements of Mimbo work as fishermen. The people of Mimbo often experience economic problems, especially the fishermen’s families. Since the husband’s income from fishing cannot meet the needs of the families, the fishermen’s wives help earning the living. When the monetary crisis hit Indonesia in 1997-1998, Mimbo people’s economy was getting worse. So in 2001 after the financial crisis is over, the wives of fishermen in Mimbo took initiative to work to improve the economy of the family. Their incomes are used to fulfill the cost of their children’s education and the basic needs of the family.
