A Short History of FIB UNEJ

 

The Faculty of Humanities, University of Jember (FIB UNEJ) was originally named the Faculty of Letters, State University of Jember. The Faculty of Letters was one of the faculties of the State University of Djember (UNED) when the university was founded on November 10, 1964 through the conversion of Tawang Alun University, which was carried out based on the Decree of the Minister of Higher Education and Science (PTIP) Number 151 dated November 9, 1964. At the time of establishment, Faculty of Letters of UNED was present in two locations, namely in Jember as the Faculty of Literature and Arts Teacher Training (FKSS) and in Banyuwangi as the Faculty of Letters.

The two earliest departments under the the Faculty of Letters UNED, namely the English Department and the Indonesian Language Department. In 1972, with the approval of the Consortium for Literature and Philosophy, the Faculty of Letters, State University of Jember opened a new department, namely the Department of History. Based on the Decree of the President of the Republic of Indonesia Number 61 of 1983, the State University of Djember changed its name to the University of Jember and the Faculty of Letters was one of the faculties of the University of Jember (UNEJ).

Several study programs have been established within the Faculty of Letters of UNEJ. Diploma 3 (D3) English Language Study Program was opened in 1995 based on the Decree of the Director General of Higher Education No. 114/DIKTI/KEP/1995 dated 8 May 1995. The Non-Regular English Literature Program was opened in 2004, based on the UNEJ Rector’s Decree Number 4863/J.25.6.1/KL/2004 dated 4 August 2004. Along with the implementation of the new policy, in 2012 the English Language Diploma Study Program was closed, followed later by the closing of the non-Regular English Literature Study Program. Television and Film Study Program (PSTF Study Program) was opened in 2010, based on the Decree of the Minister of National Education of the Republic of Indonesia Number: 97/D/O/2010 dated 9 July 2010. Furthermore, the Linguistics Master Study Program was opened in 2013, based on the Ministerial Permit Education and Culture Number: 173/E/O/2013 April 30, 2013.

Faculty of Humanities, University of Jember (FIB UNEJ) was used as the official name of the faculty in 2016, replacing the previous name Faculty of Letters, University of Jember (FS UNEJ). The announcement of the name change was contained in the Decree of the Chancellor of the University of Jember Number: 7695/UN25/KL/2016 dated June 13, 2016.

The place where the Faculty of Letters run its lectures initially took place in a building on Jalan Imam Syafi’i (the now Mutiara Shopping Center, Jember). In the 1974–1976 period, lectures for the Faculty of Letters were held at the Cipta Niaga Jember Building (PB Sudirman street). The place of study for the Faculty of Letters moved again to the Sastra Lama Building on Bratasena street in 1976. From 1985 to present the Faculty of Letters and later Faculty of Humanities occupies an area of the Tegal Boto Campus on Kalimantan street Number 37 Jember.
