SUMMARY
THE TERMS IN PERBATIKAN (MAKING BATIK) ACTIVITY IN MADURESE SOCIETY IN SUMBER PAKEM VILLAGE, SUMBER JAMBE SUBDISTRICT, JEMBER REGENCY (A SEMANTIC STUDY)
This research discusses the term in a batik activity on Madura community in Sumber Pakem Village, Sumber Jambe Subdistrict, Jember Regency. A term is a certain name which has a specific nature or a name that contains a word or a combination of words which expresses a meaning, concept, process, specific situation in a certain field. In batik industry, certain communications emerges among the workers related to their everyday’s jobs, perbatikan (making batik activity). Madurese society gives meaning and agrees that the utterance of the terms is based on what they do in daily life. Perbatikan terms in this research cover some formulations of problems, including the form and the meaning of the term for workers, materials, equipments, types of activities, and coloring pocess. This research uses three phases of research, namely (1) the phase of collecting the data by using observation and interview method, (2) the phase of analyzing the data by using unified referential then followed by classify technique for decisive element (PUP), and (3) the phase of the presentation of the analysis result by using formal and informal method of presentation.
This research used semantic approach. The research found three categories namely words, phrases, and abbreviations. The terms in the form of words consist of verbs and nouns as well as the term in the form of phrases such as verb phrases and noun phrases. Based on the structure of the form, it consists of basic words or roots and the terms in the forms of derivative words or affix words. The terms of perbatikan were analyzed based on the semantic study for revealing the changing of the forms and the changing of the sound. Besides, it also discussed the extension of meaning, the narrowing of meaning of, and study the structure of the words.
The first result of this research is the forms of perbatikan terms based on the worker, namely palako abhatek [palakͻ abhətεk], palako aghembher [palakͻ aghəmbhər], palako ngecapah [palako ŋəcappah], palako nebbheng [palakͻ nəbbhəŋ], palako nyolek [palakͻ ñͻlεk], palako nyassa [palakͻ ñassa], palako lorotan [palako lͻrͻtan]. The second is the forms of perbatikan terms based on the materials, namely malan [malan], kusti’ [kUsti?], obhet bhetek [obət bhətεk], malan keddhek [malan kəddhə?], malan re-kareh [malan rεkarεh], TRO [Turkish Red Oil]. The third is the forms of perbatikan terms based on the equipments, namely canting [cantεŋ], kasor [kasͻr], ghebhus [ghəbhus], dhlubang mennyak [dhlubəŋ mεnñya?], canteng cap [cantεŋ cap], canteng esse [cantεŋ εssε], and kennengngan nyolek [kənnəŋŋan ñͻlεk],. The fourth is the forms of perbatikan terms based on the making batik activities namley aghember [aghəmbər], nyanteng [ñantεŋ], ngisse’en [ŋissε?εn], abernaen [abərnaεn], etotop [εtͻtͻp], nyolek [ñͻlεk], nebbheng [nəbbhəŋ], nyellop [ñəllͻp], ejhemmor [εjhəmmor], alorot [alͻrͻt], eremek [εrəmək], nyamaraghi [ñamaraghi], nyassa [ñassa], nyeddrika [ñəddrika], aberri’ engghen [abərri? əŋghən], notop barna [nͻtͻp bərna], malocot malan [malͻcͻt malan]. The fifth is the forms of perbatikan term based on the coloring process, namely egren [əgrεn] and bhiru toska [bhirutͻska].
The terms in making batik activities function to give easiness for the people involving in perbatikan to utter several things related to perbatikan and to identify the materials, equipments, kinds of activities, and the coloring related to batik. The terms are very helpful for the batik artisan and the workers for everyday’s communication. In addition, the terms can be used as the communication for the Madurese batik community in Sumber Pakem Village, Sumber Jamber Subdistrict, Jember Regency.
