Translation consists of transferring the meaning of the Source language (SL) into the receptor language or Target language (TL). To make a good translation, translators need to apply translation procedures in the restructuring process of translation in the target language text (TLT). Process of translation is a model intended to explain the process of translation in the mind of translators (internal process) when they are translating. In connection with restructuring process, the translators may apply one or more procedures to produce the appropriate meanings and make the natural forms as the source language text (SLT). Translation procedure is a technical guide in translating phrase to phrase or sentence to sentence if the sentence cannot be translated into smaller units. It used for sentences and the smaller units of language. This study concerns to find out the translation procedures in the process of translation in Chapter One of a novel entitled Allegiant written by Roth and its Indonesian version translated by Aini and Asni. The analysis is based on Nida’s theory of process of translation, Newmark’s theory of the translation procedures, and Larson’s good criteria of translation.
The research objective is to analyze the process of translation, the translation procedures, and the evaluation of the translation results in Chapter One of Allegiant. There are several steps to analyze the data. First step is to analyze the sentences by using theory of the process of translation proposed by Nida (1964). Translation processes are divided into two types, namely formal equivalence and dynamic equivalence. Then, elaborate the translation procedures by using theory of the translation procedures proposed by Newmark (2001). The translation procedures are divided into seventeen types, namely transcription, one-to-one translation, through translation, lexical synonymy, componential analysis, transposition, modulation, compensation, cultural equivalent, translation label, definition, paraphrase, expansion, contraction, recasting sentence, rearrangement, translation couplet. Finally, evaluate the translation results by using the good criteria of translation proposed by Larson (1998). There are three underlying premise in which the translation results belong to the best translation. First, uses the normal language forms of the receptor language. Second, communicates, as much as possible, to the TL speakers the same meaning that was understood by the speakers of the SL. Third, maintains the dynamics of the original SLT, this means the translation is presented in such a way that it will evoke the same response as the SLT attempted to evoke.
The data are all the sentences in Chapter One of Allegiant. This study uses document as the method and purposive sampling for data collection. Documents are using written materials as a basis for the research. A purposive sampling is a sample selected in order to elicit a particular type of data. In addition, this research belongs to qualitative research. Qualitative research tends to be associated with words or images as the unit of analysis.
The result of this research proves that there are several translation procedures applied by the translators to produce the appropriate meanings and natural forms in the receptor language. First, all sentences in the chapter one are translated by using the process of dynamic equivalence. Second, there are seven out of seventeen translation procedures: (1) contraction, (2) modulation, (3) expansion, (4) transposition, (5) transcription, (6) recasting sentence, and (7) lexical synonymy within the application of translation procedures namely single, couplets, triplets, and quadruplets translation procedures. Those procedures can result in a translation which has appropriate meanings and natural forms.
