PYCHOLOGICAL STUDY OF CHILD DEVELOPMENT OF MELATI IN TERE-LIYE’S MOGA BUNDA DI SAYANG ALLAH

Abstract

Moga Bunda Disayang Allah is a novel written by  Tere Liye. It tells about Melati, a 6-year-old girl with phisical disabilities: blind and deaf. These disabilities unable Melati to communicate and interact with people on her surroundings. However, being blind and deaf did not make Melati weak. Her curiosity to understand her surrounding makes her keep fighting. It makes Karang, Melati’s teacher, try to teach Melati how to communiate. Character development is the major developing factor in this novel. The aim of this paper is to know the development of Melati’s character by using the theory of psychological development. Acording to this theory, there are nine types of development. However, the two most noticable development found in this novel are social development and feeling development. The method used to analyze this novel is descriptive qualitative method by using pragmatic appoach. It is used to explore the meaning of the psychological development. The source of the data is Moga Bunda Disayang Allah, focusing on its sentences, phrases, and words. The result of this research shows that the suitable way to communicate with Melati is using tadoma method. This method uses palm as the tool of communication. Melati, who once was antisocial, after being taught by tadoma method, she begins to open her heart to people on her surroundings (social development) and not selfish anymore (feeling development).
