Revealing the Implied Messages by Analyzing The Flouted Maxims in Utterances Found on Dumb and Dumber To Movie; Ihyak Mustofa; 110110101027; 2016; 61 pages; English Department; Faculty of Humanities; Jember University.

The objective of this study is to examine the implied messages used by the characters in utterances on Dumb and Dumber to movie. It is conducted to analyze the types of maxim flouted by the characters and the implied messages used by the characters in Dumb and Dumber to movie. The analysis is based on cooperative principles theory.

This study employs qualitative research. Qualitative research is applied to describe the data in the form of sentences in the movie subtitle and Documentary is applied in this study as the method of collecting data. The movie’s subtitle is taken from an internet source, http://www.moviesubtitles.org/subtitle-90154.html [uploaded by Sparks, accessed on May 5, 2015].

The result of this study presents that there are 104 utterances containing flouted maxims. 101 data are classified into one flouted maxim and 3 data are classified into two flouted maxims. 101 data categorized as one flouted maxim are divided into four types of flouted maxim. There are 23 utterances contain flouted maxim of relation, 31 utterances contain flouted maxim of quantity, 29 utterances contained flouted maxim of manner and 18 utterances contain flouted maxim of quality. In addition, there are 3 utterances containing two flouted maxims. 2 utterances are containing flouted maxim of quantity and maxim of manner, 1 utterance is containing flouted maxim of quantity and maxim of relation.

In Dumb and Dumb to movie, there are several reasons of the characters flout the maxims. The characters tend to flout the maxim of relation because they would like to change the situation. Another flouted maxim is maxim of quality. The reasons are some characters would like to show off. The characters flout the maxim of quantity to indirectly emphasize their discomfort. The reasons why the characters flout the maxim of manner are to express their disagreement. Additionally, the characters in Dumb and Dumber to movie also flout two maxims in an utterance. The reason is they want to emphasize their intentions.

The types of flouted maxim determine the reasons of the characters flouted the maxim. The characters flouted the maxims in Dumb and Dumber to movie are consisting of Lloyd, Harry, Mr. Pinchelow, Penny, Adele, Travis, Fraida, and Dr. Meldman. The main characters of the movie are Harry and Lloyd. Lloyd dominantly flouts the maxim of quality. The reason is he wants to show off. This shows that Lloyd is an arrogant person. In addition, Harry dominantly flouts the maxim of manner. He wants to show his disagreement towards other statement. This shows that he is a sarcastic person.

When comprehending the flouted maxim, there are possibilities to make misunderstanding or misinterpreting. This situation can happen when the speaker and the hearer do not know certain topics. Therefore, context of situation is very important for the speaker or the hearer to understand the implied messages in an utterance. Context can also help to analyze the utterances that flout the maxim of Cooperative Principles.
