CULTURAL HEGEMONY IN NOVEL TENGGELAMNYA KAPAL VAN DER WIJCK BY HAMKA: A CULTURAL STUDY

ABSTRACT

 

This research focuses on the cultural hegemony that exists in novel Tenggelamnya Kapal Van Der Wijck. A cultural study was applied to determine the cultural meanings contained in the novel. The result of the reaserch on cultural hegemony showed that a consensus must be maintained for the instability of hegemony that has been built. Novel Tenggelamnya Kapal Van Der Wijck tells about a young man named Zainuddin who could not marry a village girl named Hayati since his mother was not originally from Minangkabau. The prohibition on the relationship between Zainuddin and Hayati led to Zainuddin’s resistance as sub-ordinate class toward the custom as a dominant class and made the process of victory or negotiation go back to Minangkabau society in by the degradation of hegemonic values.
