THE TERMS OF SELAMETAN MOWANG NA’AS AND AROKAT BY MADURESE SOCIETY IN KALITAPEN VILLAGE, TAPEN SUB-DISTRICT, BONDOWOSO REGENCY (AN ETHNOLINGUISTIC STUDY)

ABSTRACT

This article discusses (1) the form of terms in slametan (a traditional ritual) mowang na’as and arokat and (2) the interpretation meaning and the use of them in the two rituals in Kalitapen Village, Tapen Sub-district, Bondowoso Regency. The data collected through observation and interviews were analyzed to know them as the terms or not and, further, to interpret the meaning of the terms based on their users’ view. The result of the study shows that the form of terms in slametan mowing na’as and arokat are in the forms of words and phrases. The words are in the forms of the original words and the affix words used by the society to communicate. The interpretation of meaning and the use of the terms shows there is an implicit meaning of them in the rituals that are only understood by the users.
