The topic related to the difference of sex and gender has never been expired and has always become a popular topic to discuss. The discussions about issues of gender related to masculinity, femininity, or the relationship between woman and man have often been shown by Indonesian media. Movie is one of media carrying themes about sex and gender. The movie about these themes in Indonesia generally discuss the relationship of power between women and men, masculinity and femininity, or another sensitive discussion about shemale, gay, lesbian, and transgender. The discussion about the sensitive topics becomes a certain attention to be brought into movie in Indonesia as the themes often contradict Indonesian culture. Someone having contradictory attitudes between his or her sex and gender role are often considered as something controversial, taboo, and unwanted as shemale, gay, lesbian, and transgender.

Salah Bodi is one of Indonesian movies bringing the sensitive discussion about transgender. The movie describes a live of two main transgender characters having inappropriate attitude between sex and gender. The research is conducted to know the representation of masculinity of a transgender character from female to male “Farhan” and the representation of femininity of a transgender character from male to female “Inong” on Salah Bodi Movie. The research adopts the theory of representation by Stuart Hall through the discursive constructionism approach as the analysis of the research. The Stuart Hall representation theory through the discursive constructionism approach basically discusses that definition does not only come through language but also come through reading. The discursive constructionism approach also discusses that knowledge about a certain reading relates to power. The reading in the form of text (picture, movie, conversation, and photograph) is not considered as something natural, normal, and neutral, but it is a manifestation of power contention.

The result of the research shows that Farhan’s masculinity as female-to-male transgender character on Salah Bodi movie is represented as a woman falling for her gender role as a man. Farhan is assertive and decisive to pick decisions. She is a leader, a hard-working husband, not easily giving up, and dominative. Inong’s femininity as male-to-female transgender character on the movie is represented as a character on the sub-ordinate position. Inong plays a role as a soft, pretty, and elegant woman. He tends to use his feeling than his logic to think, act, and make decisions. She is soft, easily giving up and fragile as Farhan’s wife.

The description of Farhan’s masculinity and Inong’sfeminity also explains the reading about transgender issue on Salah Bodi movie. The movie seems not only about transgender issue. The issue on the movie appears visible as a cover veiling gender criticism which actually stands for patriarchy and heterosexual culture as well as stressing binary gender that there are only men and women and everything is based on biological sex not gender.
