THE ANALYSIS OF DIRECTIVE SPEECH ACTS AMONGST ADOLESCENTS IN RAMBIPUJI SUB-DISTRICT, JEMBER REGENCY

ABSTRACT

The issues which are examined in this study are (1) the directive speech acts conducted amongst adolescents, and (2) how to reduce the impoliteness in directive speech acts amongst adolescents in Rambipuji Sub-district, Jember Regency. The research methods used are (1) observation method to collect the data, (2) pragmatic equivalent method and intentional manner analysis to analyze the data; and (3) informal method to provide the result of the analysis. The result of the research shows that the directive speech acts amongst adolescents conducted directly and indirectly, and the manner used by the adolescents to reduce impoliteness in directive speech acts is by using satire strategy in the form of interrogative sentences or declarative sentences. Directive speech acts that conducted directly do not mean impolite speech acts and vice versa, polite and impolite speeches are also affected by contexts, how to speak and whom the speaker speaks to. Whereas, for the politeness scale, the adolescents in everyday life do not use authority scale while communicate to each other. This study found that directive speech acts besides having competitive manner, they also have convivial manner.
